RORO corridor traffic in Basilan still on upswing »

LAMITAN, BASILAN—For the second year in a row, there has been a marked increase in vehicular traffic entering this island-province via “roll-on, roll-off” (RORO) transport.

In 2007, the number of vehicles passing through the two Basilan ports with RORO access—Isabela and Lamitan—totaled 11,288, a 41-percent rise over the previous year, based on data from the Philippine Ports Authority. The average number of vehicles per ship has likewise increased, from 8 in 2006 to 11 in 2007.  Read the rest

10 swim teams to race across Sarangani Bay »

Swim Across the BayMAASIM, Sarangani (May 15, 2008) – Ten teams are set to swim 15 kilometers, from one town to another, across Sarangani Bay on Saturday (May 17) in Sarangani Bay Festival’s most grueling race.

From Kamanga, Maasim to Tango, Glan - one of the bay’s narrowest points – swimmers will attempt to break last year’s record by Dadiangas Torpedoes of 2:50:15.23 hours to cross the bay first. Read the rest

Canadian artist works to help save endangered Philippine Eagle »

Philippine EagleDavao City — Stuart Arnett, a Canadian wildlife artist, has included the Philippine Eagle among his masterpieces in an effort to help save this great yet critically endangered species. Arnett, who is a signature member of the international group Artists for Conservation, partnered with the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) to help raise awareness and support for the survival of the country’s national heritage.

Arnett’s partnership with the PEF stemmed from reading the February 2008 issue of National Geographic Magazine where he learned about the plight of the Philippine Eagle. “One of my goals as a wildlife artist and a member of Artists for Conservation is to assist organizations such as the PEF through partnerships by raising funds through the sale of my artworks,” Arnett pointed. He has pledged to donate 40% of his sales to the PEF. Read the rest

Sarangani Bay Festival opens May 16 in Kiamba »

KIAMBA, Sarangani (May 14, 2008) – Woodbridge Beach Resort in Kiamba will host the 10am. opening program of Sarangani Bay Festival on May 16 with simultaneous competitions in land and sea.

Capitol Employees' housingALABEL, Sarangani (May 12, 2008) – Housing and zoning committee member Board Member Bong Butiong shows to Capitol employees the certificate of title from Alabel former municipal kagawad Bonifacio Alegre. Alegre’s six-hectare land in poblacion is to be purchased by the provincial government in the amount of P5.4 million from the province’s annual investment plan intended for the employees’ housing project.
